“Nothing you will do in your lifetime, realistically, will waste more money than buying a new car,” he tells !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . “It’s the single worst financial decision Millennials will ever make.”
To make matters worse, “most people borrow money to buy that car,” says Bach. “Why would you borrow money to buy an asset that immediately goes down in value by 30 percent?”
The good news is, you can get a shiny, nice-smelling car without breaking the bank, Bach says: “Buy a car that’s coming off of a two- to three-year lease, because that car is almost brand new and you can buy it at that 30 percent discount.”

it depends on your lifestyle. if you can afford the payments comfortably, why not?
me on the other hand, I don’t like to make purchases I can’t pay with cash and never have to worry about a monthly payment since I already have student loan payments, insurance, rent, utilities, and of course, BMW repairs.
Luckily the beaters I like are $10k and under.

The only thing money is good for is spending. I wouldn’t call buying a new car wasting money, but rather not utilizing your money to the fullest. If you’re comfortable with where you are, and are comfortable with your long term financial outlook, then go ahead and buy the new car.

There are times when a new car makes sense, albeit those situation are slim and most new car buyers would be better off used. But then what would happen if everyone followed that advice (the slippery slope of moral imperative or whatever)? Hardly any new cars would be offered, and used cars would be much more expensive. So it’s like an ecosystem.
4 years ago we bought new (Odyssey)— we wanted something we didn’t have to think about, that could be a workhorse and get the job done. Used models were almost as much as new, so the gap was worth it for peace of mind. It has delivered on that expectation, for the most part.
My bottom line advice is this: Don’t just live based on your cash flow, make a detailed balance sheet every 6-12 months. See how your overall financial picture is doing. Cars WILL drag it down. They will. But if you’re otherwise doing ok and growing your net worth, then you can just consider a car a part of the cost of doing business. Or having fun. Or both.
If your net worth is minimal (or negative, or shrinking) then take the financial gurus’ advice first.

It’s a pretty standard line but it fails to consider all of the variables. What if I can get a 0% new car loan and keep my cars for 10 years? What if the model I want has such high resale that a new one doesn’t cost that much more than one that’s two years old? There are always variables that have to be considered.

The fact is that you can have nice cars. You just don’t buy them coming right out of the gate. Buy a car appropriate to your position and finances, then a couple years later stair-step up to a better used car with the sale of that one and the money you have put aside for the next one. Before you know it, you may have accumulated enough to start buying those cars that actually APPRECIATE in value.
Nobody should drive a Corolla all their lives, but if you aren’t a crypto/youtube/whatever millionaire at 23, you should carefully consider your car purchases as they are declining-value assets.
Now, everybody is probably doing great in this stock market (up till these last couple months of course), but I’ll post my personal WOW moment. Right before my mom died, she gave each of my kids a little over $25K for their college. I put the money into an S&P 500 fund. In 15 years now, each have over $100K. I never added any more to the accounts. About the same time I bought a $36,000 used Lexus SUV with cash. It got wrecked last year and the insurance company gave me $8000 for it. Sure I drove it for 13 years and with gas and repairs and all it cost me about $300/month. Still that’s cheap driving, but wow, if I’d have bought a $16K SUV and invested the other $20K the exact same way, I might have $80K today.
Do what your passion tells you, but don’t leave your brain out of the decision.

I have only bought one new car as well. I bought it new because the price was so close to that of a used similar spec truck (Toyota tax) and with lower financing for a new car the payments were basically a wash.
I don’t know that keeping the car for 200k makes the depreciation argument moot, however. Situations can change quickly and if you need to get out from under a car , it might help to not have to take a bath on it. But I certainly get your point.

I disagree. The biggest waste of money is housing, bar none. Housing prices are ridiculous, the cost of upkeep is unconscionable, and selling the thing costs money.
Next biggest wastes are seminars and self-help books.
Also, they’re parroting a depreciation line that hasn’t been true in over 25 years. In the last 10 or so it is almost to the point where buying new is usually the best decision and in many cases it’s the best decision by far.

I love that time is the great equalizer when it comes to depreciaition. You can buy a 10 year old Civic or a 10 year old BMW for around the same amount of money. Just how risk averse are you, and how much are you willing to pay for maintenance? With those factors more or less existing from the get go – or at least past warranty – I’d say buying a car that has reached or is nearing its depreciation floor is where as a car enthusiast you can really have a blast.
Build up a little bit of a buffer in your budget for unforeseen repairs, and the world is your oyster.

Sorry, but I don’t care about having a shitload of money. I sure as hell don’t care to die with a bunch of money. I’d rather enjoy my time on Earth while I’m able to, and have enough for the short time I’ll be retired. Basically my plan is to work until I can’t anymore, and past that the instant I start having trouble taking care of myself it’s time to go. Hopefully there will be legal options for that by then, otherwise Mr. Remington will get the job done. Yet I think there’s something to be said, from the strictly
penny-pinching point of view, for buying something like a Toyota Corolla new, at least for car lovers
like your typical Oppo who take better than average
care of their cars.
I bought two Corollas (‘81 and ‘90) new, and I
wasn’t
your typical Oppo, I was pretty slack about the preventative maintenance, but I managed to get over 450,000 miles out of them with relatively few major repair costs.
Sure , I could have spent less money and got cars with a couple or three years on them, but of the used cars I’ve bought I only remember one where the previous owner hadn’t abused it one way or another so that it needed rather costly service shortly after I got it, and there was no manufacturer’s warranty on them either .
